Research Associate Microbial Biotechnology

 Post-doctoral research associate in the laboratory of Prof. Ibrahim Banat and Prof. Christopher Mitchel. Working primarily on a POC project funded by Invest NI investigating the potential of sophorolipid biosurfactants as anti-cancer therapeutics using both in vitro and in vivo models.

The role has allowed me to:

  • Utilize in vitro cell culture techniques to assay the effects of sophorolipids on colonic cancer cell lines.
  • Obtain a Category B Personal License under the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.
  • Transfer cell culture work into an in vivo murine model.
  • Become involved with the supervision/ marking of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Research Associate Microbial Biotechnology

Post-doctoral research associate in the laboratory of Prof. Ibrahim Banat working primarily on an EU funded Horizon 2020 multi-center project entitled MARISURF. The role focuses on leading work package 6 of this project which utilizers molecular biology tools to investigate biosurfactant production in marine bacteria.

The role has allowed me to:

  • Carry out molecular biology driven research in order to characterize and therefore optimize biosurfactant production in marine bacteria.
  • Investigate the application of new molecular biological tools for use in marine bacteria.
  • Use chemical analysis techniques to investigate biosurfactant production in novel marine bacteria.
